Flinders

Connecting the rammed earth building with a 10 year old residential garden in Flinders, incorporating it into the existing landscape.
The Brief

First, to connect the rammed earth building with the 10 year old large scale residential garden in Flinders and incorporate it into the existing landscape. Second, to create greater cohesion between the building and the landscape. Finally, to soften the appearance of hard materials through planting.

The process

Designed and produced elements such as large rock installation, wood storage, corten steel fire pit and a copper birdbath.

We began by editing the garden layout for clarity and legibility, bringing the experience of the garden back to a human scale by recontouring and replenishing garden beds. We used many existing plants already on site. Then we complemented these with mass plantings of flowers in a simplified palette to create swathes of colour for greater impact. We also designed and produced elements such as large rock installation, wood storage, corten steel fire pit and a copper birdbath.
The result

A contemporary cohesive planting plan and rock installation with a Japanese Zen aesthetic.

We created greater balance of scale between the building and landscape. There is increased dialogue between the natural materials, the building and the contours of the landscape. Garden edging mirrors the geometric shape of the building, softening the hard surfaces through planting. We introduced a contemporary cohesive planting plan and rock installation with a Japanese Zen aesthetic.
